Exploring Sound & Music with Eamon Sweeney

Ages suitable for? 2-4 year olds and their adults.
See and play music in a free and open environment with musician Eamon Sweeney, using gongs, chimes, bells, ocean drums, simple percussion instruments and song.
This series of individual monthly workshops is intended to allow you and your child to explore different art mediums in an open and undirected way. There will be mess but there will also be fun! Cost: €5 per child per workshop (accompanying adult is free). Box Office on 01-8852622.
WORKSHOP NOTES
These workshops are designed for children aged 2-4 years. Please respect age limits as each workshop has been designed especially for this age range. All children must be accompanied by an adult and all adults must be accompanied by a child. These sessions are only suitable for one parent/guardian and accompanying child (without siblings).

Unwrapped 2019 Lantern Making Workshop

Unwrapped Festival marks the beginning of the winter festive season. Join in the festivities by taking part in a lantern-making workshop. Throughout November lantern making workshops will take place every Saturday at Rua Red. The workshops are suitable for all ages. Come along and have a go!
You, your family (and your lantern!) are invited to then take part in the Unwrapped lantern parade that will take place on Saturday 7 December. This year’s theme is Safe Haven and is inspired by a profoundly beautiful and moving film animation by artist Majid Adin & Stephen McNally about a refugee’s search for a safe haven.
Booking is essential. Workshop places are limited and book up fast! Your €5 fee covers the cost of your lantern lights

Outreach, Midlands Science Festival – Viking Artefact Detective!

The Education Department of the Museum of Archaeology are out and about this Science Week! Pop into Treo Nua, Portlaoise to explore the archaeological evidence of the Vikings with reference to Laois at a special family event as part of the Midlands Science Festival. Our Museum Educators will have replica artefacts and raw materials which you can pick up and take a closer look at. Learn how archaeologists use scientific techniques to discover more about life in the past, then use evidence to solve the puzzle and figure out how the Vikings cleverly used antler, wood, bone and amber! This event is part of a partnership between the National Museum and Midlands Sciencne to bring museum outreach to the Midlands region. The Laois events are presented in association with Laois Heritage Office. No booking required, pop-in any time between 3.00 and 5.00pm. Wheelchair accessible.
