Family Drop-in Creative Corner | Light, Darkness, Drama

Inspired by the collection and our exhibitions, these workshops are suitable for tiny tots (about 18 months) up to age 8. You can choose to stay for as long or as short a time as works for you.

The space will be divided up by age group and ability, and each child will be encouraged by Artist and NGI Education Assistant Caomhán Mac Con Iomaire and the week’s guest artist to create their own work on the week’s theme.

We hope that you can come to all five workshops, but we understand that your schedule may not work like that. Each workshop will stand alone as a complete activity as well.

Seeing in the Dark

Caravaggio was famous for his dark paintings which only show flashes of light. In this workshop we will use his technique to make our own dark and dramatic pictures.

Lego Animation Series

Make your own Lego movie in this hands-on workshop with Brick Flicks.

Brick Flicks stop motion workshops make LEGO mini figures come alive! All you need to bring is your favourite Lego character to cast as the star of your own legendary adventure.The workshop involves plenty of hands on learning, combined with some simple demonstrations. You will work in small groups to create a set, storyboard and plan for your very own stop motion movie. You will then film, edit, and record audio for your mini-movie using iPads. Your final masterpieces will then be shared on The Ark’s YouTube channel for you to share with friends and family!

Creative Writing Workshop

We are delighted to announce that Dave Rudden will be holding two workshops at The Hugh Lane as part of the Dublin UNESCO City of Literature’s Citywide Reading Campaign, for which his new book, Knights of the Borrowed Dark, has been selected for 2017. In this practical creative writing workshop led by author Dave Rudden participants will explore how to develop ideas, plot structures and characters, how to edit your writing and how to bring an idea from your head to the page. The session will culminate with a 15 minute Q&A with the author and the person with the best question will win a signed copy of his book The Knights of the Borrowed Dark. No experience necessary.

 The Enchanted Castle – Interactive Kids Concert

Making sounds, moving around, dressing up, standing completely still with mouth wide open, it’s all good with us!

We have play mats, lego, colouring, and musical worksheets for older children.  All are welcome to come and have a closer look at the instruments at the end of the concert.

There will be time for them to go and investigate the instruments, to touch feel and pluck!

Classical Kids gives children a chance to enjoy classical music in a setting that allows them to learn, feel and express themselves.

Family Day: Explore and Respond to 2D Art

To paint, print, shoot and draw … this time we will explore by looking at the wall hanging art work in the exhibition, followed by time in our workshop room to respond to the work you found most interesting with chalk, pencil and charcoal.

Early Years Workshop: Look at Me!

A fun and creative session with artist Jane Groves that introduces young children (Ages 2-4) to simple portraiture.

Jane will welcome the children into the workshop with an engaging story about a child who sees their own reflection in a pond for the very first time! What did they see? Maybe their round face, their curly hair, their brown eyes, their freckles or dimples!

This story will be followed by an interactive session where the children will participate in different activity areas using a variety of natural materials and mark making tools to create simple portraits.

This session encourages the children to explore their own individual facial features with the help of their accompanying adult, in a playful and relaxed environment.

Port life print workshop

Join artist Liliane Puthod for this print workshop, which is inspired by our current exhibition of work by Belgian artist Eugeen Van Mieghem, Port Life. The workshop will include a visit to and exploration of the exhibition, followed by a print workshop which will consider port life in Dublin city.
