Take a look at the family friendly events happening in and around Dublin over the next week for you to enjoy.
Please check that they are still running before setting out, as sometimes even the best events have to be postponed.

Our signature Festival Family event featuring live music with Heroes From Mars, kids disco, face painting, art workshops with Bowie portrait artist Sara Captain, Bowie fashion, the No Commitment Choir and a literary workshop with Little People, Kids Dreams author Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara. We will also host our Bowie Market at this event.

Inspired by Harry Clarke’s The Eve of St. Agnes we will make our own beautiful starry sky pop up card during this art workshop with artist Kathryn Maguire


Free Family Day: Seaweed Sculptures – Sat 11 Jan

Come and listen to the strange and wonderful sounds of our exhibition ‘Holdfast’ and explore the artist’s kelp seaweed sculpture before creating some weird and wonderful sculptural pieces of your own using materials from nature: clay, dried seaweed, sticks and stones. What wonders can you create?

At our weekly drop-in workshop, children and their parents/guardians/carers are encouraged to work together on creative projects. Drop-in and stay for as long (or as little!) as you wish.

Suitable for children of all ages, these workshops take place in the Maples Group Creative Space in our Atrium.

Join us for a special tour designed for children and their guardians, parents and carers.

Our aim is to make the artworks fun and engaging for kids, and to welcome families and visitors of all ages and encourage them to feel comfortable in the Gallery.

National Gallery

New parents’ tour

These tours are for parents, guardians, and carers of young children, and will focus on a selection of highlights in the permanent collection. Our aim is to welcome families and visitors of all ages and encourage them to feel comfortable in the Gallery rooms. 

The route is suitable for prams and strollers, and all are welcome. 


If you, or a friend, has a baby that is over 6 week’s old, then why not join one of our baby massage classes.

As well as being a great skill for parents to know, our 4 week course is a really easy way to meet other local new parents.

Our instructors are all members of Baby Massage Ireland and the cost of the course is covered by most health insurance providers.

We are looking forward to banishing those January blues with a gorgeous programme of baroque duos performed on period instruments by husband and wife team Malachy Robinson (viola de gamba) and Anita Vedres (baroque violin). We can’t wait!

Super Sea Snails & Sea Slugs

Explore the squish and squash of clay to create some imagined clay sea snails and sea slugs inspired by listening to the wonderful sounds and sights of Ann Ensor’s exhibition ‘Holdfast’. Clay is fun, and is also messy, so make sure to dress for mess (bring spare clothes if you wish).

WORKSHOP NOTES
This series of individual monthly workshops is intended to allow you and your child to explore different art mediums in an open and undirected way. There will be mess but there will also be fun! Cost: €5 per child per workshop (accompanying adult is free). Box Office on 01-8852622. These workshops are designed for children aged 2-4 years. Please respect age limits as each workshop has been designed especially for this age range. All children must be accompanied by an adult and all adults must be accompanied by a child. Where indicated please DRESS FOR MESS and bring a change of clothes. These sessions are only suitable for one parent/guardian and accompanying child (without siblings).

Moon Woke Me Up

Moon Woke Me Up Nine times. It was still 4am.
So I built a rocket with my friends. And went on a journey that never ends. 
Come up and away with us. Come and play with us. Come build a rocket that will BLAST OFF and take us on a magical journey to the moon. All the way, up there, in outer space. 
I wonder if it smells of cheese? I wonder if it will make me sneeze? Let’s find out! 

Inspired by a Haiku of the same title by Basho Matsuo, Moon Woke Me Up is an interactive theatrical adventure to outer space for ages 2-4 years, using a wonderful blend of performance and interactive drama, construction play and sensory explorations. The performance runs alongside SPACE TO PLAY, an interactive, free-play space designed by Orla Kelly of Early Childhood Creativity in collaboration with Little Bigtop.

Commissioned by The Civic. Original production funded by The Civic, Creative Ireland and South Dublin County Council in a partnership supported by South Dublin Libraries and Rua Red.

Colours, Shapes and Patterns in Paintings

During this art workshop with artist Barbara O’Connell we will look at colours, shapes and patterns in paintings on display as inspiration for the creation of our own Japanese inspired artwork using origami papers.

Owls winter camp

When Monday 30th – Friday 3rd January 2020  (excluding Wednesday 1st). from 9.30-2.30. Children can attend for the four days or just one or two.
Where Turvey Nature Reserve.
How much? OWLS members €20 per day, non owls members €25
Ages suitable for? For ages 6 and up.

Theme:  Fire and Ice. Lots of fire making and craft activities.

As it will be run by our two new leaders (Swan and Red Squirrel) the numbers are restricted to 30 children.
